Educational Interpreter
1. Interprets/transliterates school related activities including but not limited to lectures, discussions, tests, films, assemblies, conferences, sports events, clubs, field trip, etc. using sign to voice and voice to sign interpretation or transliteration techniques.
2. Adjusts communication mode to match the receptive preference(s) of the student(s) to whom assigned.
3. Assists student and regular education teacher with appropriate setup so that the student may view the interpreter, teacher, class and any media used
4. Secures media, texts, and future lesson plans from regular education teacher in order to prepare student for new signs to be introduced.
5. Appropriately repairs any interpreting errors that may occur.
6. Encourages student independence by adhering to best practices of educational interpreters
7. Provides review and clarification services to reinforce previously interpreted class material through sign language, pre-teaching signs and/or working with the teacher of the Deaf/HH to reinforce concepts.
8. Informally teaches signs to other students, family members, teachers and administration.
9. Attends the student’s IEP meeting or provides a written report to the IEP team including information regarding the student’s classroom communication skills and needs.
10. Provides input to the teacher of the Deaf/HH on the student’s communication proficiencies and preferences on an ongoing basis.
11. Adheres to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Code of Professional Conduct as applicable and follows the Pennsylvania Guidelines for Educational Interpreters suggested practices.
1. High School Diploma, required
2. Minimum score of 3.5 on one level (elementary and secondary) of the Educational Interpreter
3. Performance Assessment, required.
4. Minimum score of 3.5 on both levels (elementary and secondary) of the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment, preferred.
5. College (two or four year Interpreting degree) or educationally related degree, preferred.
6. Two to five years related work experience, preferred.
7. Ability to work as part of the educational team while referencing communication needs as listed on the student’s Individual Education Program (IEP).
8. Strong interpersonal skills.
9. Working knowledge of and ability to explain role of the educational interpreter to regular education staff and administration.
10 Ability to work with minimal supervision.
11 Possess manual dexterity, visual acuity and facial features allowing for clear visual communication access.
12 Demonstrate problem solving skills to create equitable classroom access for students who are Deaf/HH.
13 Ability to speak clearly and distinctly.
14 Ability to hear and understand auditory sounds and speech information.
15 Is flexible and willing to fulfill role of an interpreter in the educational setting.
16. Ability to prioritize communication needs of students(s) by interpreting interactions among teachers, staff and peers.
17. Ability to comply with the AIU Conduct policy .
